Avis was founded in 1946, by Warren Avis who reasoned for the need of a reliable ground transportation throughout the country; hence, car rental. In the 1950's, the Avis system thrived throughout the United States and caught on internationally. In the 1960's Avis expanded into car leasing and enhanced many services. In 1962, Avis launched its successful advertising campaign. "We're only No2, We try harder". The campaign had instant consumer success. The campaign furthermore strengthened Avis's position in Europe surpassing its competitor, Hertz. Since its establishment, Avis has grown significantly and, as of today, has a worldwide network of over 5500 offices in 172 countries.
